FIONA: A Friend Who Sticks Closer Than Wi-Fi (& sometimes even family)

The Soul-Deep Gift of Chosen Companionship

The Momentary Thoughts from a Satiated Mind is a sacred space where Spirit speaks before the fruit ever shows. Where whispers of heaven plant themselves in voice notes and morning commutes and friendly Whatsapp messages. Where prayer calls turn into healing sessions!  Oh, and the thought, she’s sometimes that unexpected guest—showing up barefoot, bold, and right on time… even if I’m in yesterday’s sweats and not emotionally ready for company 😅

This week one of the most cherished humans I have known celebrated a birthday…Fiona

F – Focused

I – Intentional

O – Oneness

N – Nurturing

A – Alignment

On Sunday evening I had gone to bed thinking about her.  Come Monday morning —, as I awoke, I was still wrapped in her PRESENCE my heart tugging at me, I asked myself, “How do I pray for Fiona today?”

The whisper came instantly: closer than a brother.

You know what I did next?  What any Holy Ghost sanctified person, who is not really good with bible scripture would do…🤣🙈—I asked my companion Google where in the bible I’d find the verse that said, “closer than a brother”?  And viola…let me say thank God for holy search engines, because Proverbs 18:24 popped up instantaneously!  I particularly liked the Message version which says:

“Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like a brother.”

Let’s pause for a minute and read that scripture again, this time, slowly.  Because that verse deserves an amen and a hallelujah.  Some friends are like Wi-Fi signals—strong one minute, mysteriously gone the next.  One break-down and off you go to the junk yard!  But a real one?  A real friend is like that aunty who shows up uninvited—with food, unsolicited advice, and spiritual discernment you didn’t ask for but lowkey needed.  Faithful.  Comforting.  Sometimes even better than blood.

Soul Agreements & Divine Matchmaking

My friend Itai once said, “Friends are the family we handpick—because our souls know exactly what they need.”   Whew.  Her words have stayed with me for years.  I read a book once, My Soul’s Plan by Robert Schwartz, and the man had the nerve to say we actually choose our life blueprints before we even get here—including the folks we’ll laugh with, cry with, fight with, heal, and grow with!  🤔

When I read these words from this book for the first time, I clutched my pearls. "Lord, You mean I picked all these people on purpose?"  Haaa??  But now when I think of these words… I think about people like Fiona. (Focused, Intentional, Oneness, with Nurturing, Alignment)  mannn...I’m so good I came up with that Acronym as I was writing this.  😊

And I laughed. "Okay, okay… maybe my soul got it right at least once… or twice."

Because when my spirit hugged Fiona’s, it wasn’t just friendship—it was divine matchmaking.  Holy alignment.  A soul pact sealed in GRACE.

From Girls' High to God’s Divine-Paths

We met in Lower 6 at Girls’ High School.  Did we instantly click?  Can’t recall.  But what I do remember are the moments—those simple but heart stamping moments that let me know:  This one is for life.

I was the high school statistic—pregnant at 18 by someone who didn’t even claim me. Shame wrapped around me like fog.  I was expelled.  I was mocked!  I became a laughing stock!  I was the talk of the time!  And the only one I could speak to, unfiltered and raw, was Fiona.

She didn’t just sympathize. She showed up—with, PRESENCE, and the kind of friendship that doesn’t flinch at messiness.  The words that let me know she was here to stay where these simple words when I told her, I think it’s time to go and tell my mom…, and she asked…“Do you need me to come with you?”…  She came to see me at home after the expulsion.  She was the first at my bedside when I had my baby.  She was there when I first got married and when I got divorced, she was there.  She was there when I moved to the US.  When I gave my first talk.  When I couldn’t hear God.  When I danced with Him on the mountaintop.  When I found Fiji.  She was there on my back patio, barefoot and hollering songs she loves like she was leading worship in heaven’s backyard.

She has ALWAYS been there!

Not always daily, or even monthly.  Sometimes our chats are as sporadic and inconsistent as Zimbabwean electricity load shedding.  But the thread never snaps.  Because presence, not proximity, is the language of our friendship.

In this sacred moment—a “Momentary Thought of a Satiated Mind”I  take a moment to really celebrate Fiona.

Louder than before. Deeper than usual. Because Spirit whispered, “Honor those who’ve held you through every season.” And I listened!

To the Friends Who Feel Like Home…

To the ones who show up with truth, tissues, tea and cupcakes...

To the ones who don’t ask questions when they see your tears—because they already know…

To the ones who send memes and scriptures, jokes that leave you crying with joy…

To the ones who feel like soul-furniture—always in place, always comforting…

Here’s to you…🥂

I was reminded by Proverbs 18:24 that, “Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like a brother…”  And sometimes—They stick even better than family. Because God, in His creative brilliance, built a backup system called real friendship—those soul-deep connections that are there for the mess and the miracles.

💭Now, I invite you to reflect…

  • Who is your Fiona? You know that one, who stands by you when life is loud, messy, bittersweet?

  • Have you thanked them lately?

  • If you don't have one, be the friend that someone needs today!! It is in giving that we receive!

Pause. Take a breath. Look around. You maybe the someone who another needs to laughs with in the light, cry with in the dark, and hold hands with when the words won’t come. They don’t need explanations. Just your gratitude.

I Offer this P.R.A.I.S.E. Prayer for Friendship:

P Praise

Mother, Father, God, Holy Spirit,

You are the Divine Connector, of friendship. You are the Master Weaver of hearts. For this I am so grateful.

R – Repentance

Forgive me Lord, for at times, I overlook sacred connections, and I fail to show up or listen well, taking the gifts you have given me for granted

A – Appreciation

Thank You for all the friends you have given me that hold close to me like a sister/brother.  And for all the friends who carry me through every twist and turn.  I am so grateful for every giggle, every tear, every voice note that becomes a healing balm.

I – Intercession

Pour strength into the spirit of all friendships.

May joy dwell in their hearts of those who call each other friend.

May PEACE beyond understanding be theirs in each moment.

Cover them with grace, favor, and divine opportunities to continue to grow in LOVE. Remove all doubts and allow their hearts to forgive easily and effortlessly, ALWAYS.

S – Surrender

Teach me HOW to be a better friend, Lord.  Help me to show up fully, speak kindly, and stay especially when it is hard. May I reflect Your LOVE in every text, call, and silent prayer.

E – Embrace

I now embrace my soul connections with deep gratitude, an open and loving heart.

I now embrace that in my true being I am all that God is, and there for, I am the LOVE that God is!

I ask.  I allow.  God becomes.  And so, it is.  Amen.

🥂💛 Here’s to Fiona‼️

And here’s to the FIONAs in all our lives that rock our worlds and are: Focused.  Intentional.  One with our spirit. Are Nurturing.  And always in divine Alignment.

Let’s thank them.  Celebrate them.  And remember:

When God wants to love on you real good—He sends a Fiona your way!

Food for the Soul:

“In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.”  (The Prophet) —Khalil Gibran
